Meghan Markle's Wedding Tiara Compared to Kate Middleton's Tiara

Posted by Gladis Harcrow on Wednesday, July 10, 2024

You probably haven't heard yet, but today, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry married in a stunning ceremony at Windsor Castle.

For her big day, the bride wore an elegant custom gown designed by Givenchy. What sparkled the most, however, was the diamond tiara topping off her all-white look.

Markle wore Queen Mary's Filigree tiara—a diamond antique piece featuring a brooch that dates all the way back to 1893. Originally belonging to Queen Mary, the tiara was inherited by Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

Though her tiara, dress, and the ceremony itself differed immensely from the 2011 wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, it's impossible not to compare the two. While we've already done a side-by-side of Meghan and Kate's wedding gowns along with each of the couple's first kisses, let's take a closer look at the historic tiaras each woman decided to wear for her wedding day.

Though the styles of each tiara differed, they were both of course completely encrusted with diamonds. Meghan's tiara originally belonged to Queen Mary, whereas Kate's tiara for her special day was originally a gift Queen Elizabeth II received for her 18th birthday.

Kate's headpiece, the Cartier Halo Scroll tiara, featured nearly 1,000 diamonds and was originally purchased by King George VI as an anniversary gift to his wife in 1936.

Leading up to the wedding, many speculated which tiara Meghan would wear for the big day—and whether she would borrow a piece from Queen Elizabeth II. It turns out Her Majesty did loan Markle the headpiece, which is also known as Queen Mary's diamond bandeau tiara, Kensington Palace announced.

Although slightly different in design, both Kate and Meghan's first tiara moments made for the perfect introduction into royalty.
